Belize is the second smallest country in Central America. It is located on the east coast, the Caribbean coast, and shares borders with Mexico and Guatemala. These three countries share the nucleus of the ancient Maya civilization with its periphery extending as far as Honduras and Nicaragua. This is attested to by the ruins of Xunantunich and Caracol in Belize
and Tikal in Guatemala.
There are also many hidden or forgotten caves where ancient ceremonies took place.
The people of Belize value their great past BUT they also value the beauty of their present day and they are planning for the future. They have gone to great length to preserve its flora and fauna by creating a number of preserves such as the Community Baboon Sanctuary where we saw and heard the Howler Monkeys or the Belize Zoo where only animals found in Belize are kept in pairs in their natural habitat.
Off of the Belize shore, is one of the longest coral reefs in the world. As diving becomes more popular and affordable, the reef has become a great economic asset.
It is the crook cashew tree that is more of an economic asset on the grassroot level. It is from these strange red and yellow, pear shaped fruits with the hanging exterior seed (not nut), that wine, jelly, canned fruit and "nuts" are produced and sold. Belize is delightful country to visit and tour with much to see and do though not crowded nor real "touristy" yet.
