Cartagena is a major port on Colombia's north coast and the Caribbean. It was founded in 1533 by Spain though the area had been inhabited for 6000 years before that.
Historically it was an important port for shipping Peruvian gold to Spain and for bringing slaves into the colony now cruise ships bring thousands of tourists.
Old Cartagena is an extremely beautiful city and is an UNESCO World Heritage site. Nearly 8 miles of stone wall surround the Old City which is no longer needed for protection but adding much to its beauty and interest now.
Like many old cities the streets are narrow and windy though in Cartagena lovely balconies over hang these streets and many are bedecked with bright colored flowers.
A number of plazas are scattered throughout the town and filled with many fun and interesting art pieces depicting everyday life.
Cartagena is not without a fine museum. It occupies the finest edifice in town, the Palacio de la Inquisicion, which is entered through a superb baroque gateway.
Cartagena is a fun, wonderful town, worthy of any BUCKET LIST.
