Chiang Mai is the second largest city in Thailand, has a unique culture and is just a delightful place. It is located in the north of Thailand and attracts not only tourists but also many of the natives from the hill tribes around it.
It was originally built in 1292 as a walled city with a moat though only the moat remains as a green space in the heart of the city.
As in most all of Thailand, Chiang Mai is filled with many bright, beautiful, golden temples, and unique to us, were all the dragons guarding them.
A Cultural Center in Chiang Mai expounded on the diversity of the area and allowed us to experience and enjoy the traditional food, music and dances of all Thailand.
The high point, though, of Chiang Mai, is a visit to the conservation based Elephant Nature Park where elephants are retrained for the tourist industry rather than the lumber industry.
Here we were treated to an ox cart ride by the slowly disappearing Lampoon oxen, to an elephant ride through the jungle and last to a long rafting trip down a river on a bamboo raft.
