The Everglades are a very unique place in the world!! It is NOT a swamp
NOR is it just a sea of grass
BUT a 50 mile (80K) wide very shallow river. Lake Okeechobee
is the source of the Everglades which is also the second largest fresh water lake in the US. This is the only place on earth where both crocodiles and alligators are found together. At Sawgrass Recreation Park you can take an exciting excursion of the Everglades in an airboat.
These boats are propelled over the water at speeds of up to 50mph with air generated by huge noisy fans. They can skim over water as shallow as 1 and 1/2" at that speed. It is not unusual to see a number of large alligators
and many different birds
both large and small on these excursions though seeing any other wild animals or any of the destructive exotics is rare. At Seagrass Recreation Park, we did see one of the endangered Florida panthers
that had been rescued and we got to hold a baby alligator but as a whole we took care and kept our distance
from anything that moved while in the Everglades!!
