Gondar, a UNECO Heritage site, is a beautiful city in the very historic country of Ethiopia. By definition, it is a small city but with all the amenities of a city.
It was established as Ethiopia's capital in 1636 when Emperor Fasiledas moved his royal camp into Fasiladas Castle, though in ruins now, it still stands.
It remained the capital until 1864. A number of other royal components and palaces were built during that time period all enclosed within a 3,000 foot long wall.
The Ethiopian Orthodox Christian religion is the primary religion in Gondor and all of Ethiopia. Both monasteries and churches are found in Gondar.
The Debra Birhre Selassie Church is one of the world's most unique with its 104 cherubin faces and wings painted on the ceiling and its walls totally painted with Biblical scenes.
Though Gondar and Ethiopia are not well known on the travel roster nor are they as developed, they are unique and should be high on everyone's BUCKET LIST.
