It's the country of Georgia in the Caucasus Mountains of the Middle East just south of Russia. This highway runs about 130 miles from Tbilisi, Georgia to Vladiksukaz, Russia half of which is in Georgia and the only section we traveled. It is a very old, rugged route in or edging a narrow canyon.
It also follows three rivers, two of which do not mix well.
Many peoples, and for various reasons, have used this route and still do.
It has been, throughout time, a very important route and those who controlled it defended it with watch towers, still seen on the hill sides, and fortified churches and monasteries.
The USSR in an effort to form a bond with the people of Georgia and soften their image, built the massive, colorful Friendship Monument
along this road. Then in 1989, at the highest point of the road, a sports hotel and winter resort were built by an Austrian company complete with glassed domed huts
and ski runs, much used and enjoyed now by the Georgians. There is a mineral formation of unknown makeup along this highway that flowing all the way down to the road.
And totally new and amazing to me were truck shelter that trucks could take refuge in during storms and inclement weather.
Without a doubt, this is a fascinating road.
