Salalah was formally the capital of the Arab country of Oman located on the Arabian peninsula. The Arabian peninsula is a desert now BUT at one time was the bottom of the sea and oddly enough sea shell fossils
are found in the desert sand. Sultan Qaboos, present ruler of Oman, was born in Salalah and a palace
is still maintained here for his return or his visits. The city is known as the Garden City because it yearly "greens up" during the monsoons which move in from the Arabian Sea. Many tourists visit during the monsoons when waterfalls appear in the wadies and the city is green. As the Garden City, many wonderful fruits and vegetables are found there and a special treat is coconut water straight from the coconuts.
Frankincense is a very important and attractive product of Oman not only now but historically also.
It was one of the gifts given to the Christ Child. The Frankincense tree
is a small spindly tree found both in the wild and successfully planted into groves.
Its sap, when burned, has a sweet aroma but harvesting is an intense process of scraping the bark
then several weeks later returning and plucking the bead of sap from the scrape. Frankincense is a popular tourist item and a whole market is devoted to its sale.
The "greening" and beaches are not the only attractions in Salalah for the city is reputed to have the tombs of four Islamic prophets, one of which is the biblical prophet JOB. The magnificent, stunningly white Grand Mosque,
commissioned by the Sultan himself, is in the heart of the city. Salalah, Oman, in this almost unknown land, caught between the desert and sea is a surprising jewel.
