The beautiful city of Skopje is the capital of this ancient nation.
Though habitation of this area pre-date the Romans, the Romans had a large colony here as attested to by the unique cemetery where the grave stones are still 'in situ' and a road connecting it to the rest of the Roman Empire.
Skopje was also the birth place of the humble and love-filled Mother Teresa and though her birth place has been destroyed a Memorial House to her has been erected and arranged and furnished in the way she may have lived.
The Old Turkish area is the most fun and interesting part of Skopje and though the old bath houses are deteriorating they are beautiful and some are being renovated into museums.
Overlooking the town, which is being beautifully rebuilt from the ravages of earthquakes (1904, 1963 etc.), floods and the communist era and beautified with much public art, stands the walls of the ancient Kale Fortress.
